This piece is a guest-style essay commissioned for the rebuilt site, written in an editorial voice rather than as a named individual’s memoir. It is not a statement on behalf of any Traditional Owner group.
A helicopter compresses country into a picture. That is its gift and its arrogance. You can see a reef’s puzzle or a range’s maze in a minute, and you can leave thinking you know it.
You do not. You know a pattern. The park walk, the cultural centre, the marine-park zoning map, the farmer who lives under the track — those are other kinds of knowledge. World Heritage listing names outstanding value; it does not sell you the place.
If you fly, fly to be oriented. Then go back down and behave as a visitor who read the land manager’s page. That is the whole guest argument.
